We couldn't let the occasion of HRH The Queen's Diamond Jubilee pass without thanking her wholeheartedly for being such a wonderful ambassador for colours.

She never fails to wear colourful outfits to ensure that the stands out in any crowd.

Our Colourful Queen

It must be reported here that the May edition of Vogue UK has done a fantastic piece of research by analysing how often The Queen wore each colours. One cannot be sure whether HRH has been 'done' (i.e. colour-analysed), but it is to be noted that the colours she chooses are so often just perfect for her Cool colouring.

The chart on the left is what Vogue reported are the colours (and prints) she most often wears.

The Queen with her white hair and pale blue eyes is now a Cool; however as a young woman with dark hair and bright blue eyes she was a Clear. Indeed, most women as they age will find that their skin tone and their hair colours change, and also their eyes. So, it is worth revising the palette of colours one wears from time to time. This is what The Queen has been doing for the past 60 years of her reign - whilst of course taking note of colour fashion trends.

The colour trends for this spring are bold, bright colours, and The Queen is right there showing us how to wear colour at any age.

Our stylish Queen

Rain or shine, town or country, home or abroad, The Queen keeps to a style she knows works for her - and every single occasion is marked by an appropriate outfit.

Over the years, we have seen her wearing cinched waist skirts, peplum jackets and many more trends that are still followed these days, and which now make all the trends in vintage shops.

The Queen is a Classic. Her winning combination of dress + coat or jacket with matching hat has become her uniform for successful outfits. Her jackets and coats are always buttoned down neatly; the hemline has remained just below the knee for all these years and together with a shift dress, the whole outfit is beautifully coordinated.

Hints and tips to follow The Queen's style

Hats: aim for a style with an uplifted brim so that the crowd can see you smile.

Coats/jackets: a 3/4 sleeve (also known as bracelet sleeve) is best if you wear gloves or own magnificent... bracelets.

Evening wear: Stick to your whites and pale shades but make them sparkly with diamante embellishments. The more luxurious the fabric, the better.

Lipstick: make sure it is in your right pink, just like HRH The Queen does with her sugary to fuchsia pink shades.

Jewels: don't shy away from dazzling the crowds, even if yours are not the real thing. Mix pearls and diamonds for great effects.

Country style: Barbour is the way to go with brogues on your feet, and a versatile twin-set.

So a big BRAVO to Her Majesty and HURRAY for her enduring style.

Pastels & Make-up

The make-up colours you choose to wear with your pastels will very much depend on your personal colouring. However, you don't want to go too strong - it will overpower rather than compliment the pastels, or too faint -you will disappear in a haze of paleness!

* Go for either stronger lips or stronger eyes

* Keep your make-up defined and groomed

* Don't forget your eyebrows and mascara (or have your eye lashes tinted). The autumn catwalks were full of bright blue mascaras, so be on-trend and if blue features in your make-up palette, don't forget Colour Me Beautiful's navy mascara.

Perfect Pastels

Pastel Perfect

Sugary, pale, ice-cream, soft, sorbet, light - call them what you will, but these pastel shades come in every hue this season. You will find colours from apricot to baby pink, eau de nil to sky blue, buttermilk to lemon. They may not have the impact of bolder colours, but they are pretty and uplifting and make a useful addition to your spring/summer wardrobe.

How to wear pastels

Most of us don't go through daily life looking like we have fallen out of the fashion pages, so forget the head-to-toe pastel look and bring in your medium greys, your denims and your whites to mix with your pastels. Lots of pastel is fine for under 25's or on smaller frames - larger frames need something with more ?personality'.

- Wearing a pastel top with your dark work trousers or skirt is a subtle way to bring in colour to your work wardrobe without being too bold. However, if it's gravitas you are after, forget pastels.

- Watch out for the weight of the fabric. Pastels lend themselves to chiffon, gauzy knits and the lightest of linen. Make sure that these materials are right for you and your bone structure.

- Take care with the transparency of the fabric and the colour of your underwear - a black bra under a top in a light shade is a big no-no.

- Before you invest in these gorgeous light shades, consider the amount of TLC and dry-cleaning/laundering they require.

Who can wear what?

- If you have light hair, light eyes and pale skin, pastels are made for you. However, you don't want to disappear in a haze of pale colours, so make sure you wear make-up and accessories which will blend gently with your outfit.

- If you have dark hair and dark eyes, it is best to keep the pastel shades to one garment. Colour blocking will be perfect for you.

- If you have auburn hair and some freckles (ie. warm colouring), make your pastels work for you with apricot, primrose and mint. Ideally you want to wear them with slightly stronger shades of orange (big this season), amber or purple.

- The cools amongst you (ash blondes, silver, and those on the way to becoming silver-haired) will look great in tones of duck egg, rose pink and light aqua toned down with medium and light grey for an elegant and summery look.

- If you have piercing blue eyes (or green) with dark hair and porcelain skin, go for contrast and colour blocking, even if the colour blocking comes from a bead necklace. Think a light aqua top with a Chinese blue necklace, and royal blue slim trousers (or blue jeans).

- Those of you with a soft and muted colouring should keep your pastels colours right in the middle: think Verbena and Soft Violet put together.

It's not just a question of keeping the chill off, it's about investing in a jacket that you can show off and enjoy wearing. So, here are our top jacket buys for the new season.

The Modern Blazer

The modern blazer comes in a range of cuts, lengths and colours so we're not just talking about the classic tailored look here. Your blazer might be anything from a collarless box style, a peplum or a relaxed boyfriend look. It has become an enduring alternative to the cardigan because there are so many cuts avaliable to choose from.

It is a better option for later in the season when it's warmer, but you can still wear a jersey underneath it on cooler days. It's always worth having a couple of blazers in your wardrobe as they can make a simple outfit something a bit more special. They can add shape and a stylish edge and this season they will add colour too; there are blazers in the most wonderful range of shades from light
pastels to bold brights, so you won't be short of choice.

Style Tips: pick a colour that looks great on you and works with a number of outfits and make sure you get the right cut for your figure.

The Sporty Parka

The lightweight parka never really goes out of style, but this season it gets an Olympic update with a stylish sporty edge. It's always a winner for British springs and summers as it's easy to carry with you anywhere, ready for that unexpected shower. The new look is more neat casual than slouchy sportswear and there are plenty colours to choose from.

Choose one of your best shades and you'll be set for spring, plus it will brighten your spirits on a grey day. Or, why not make like an Olympic number one and go for gold - the metallic parka adds a touch of glitz.

Style Tip: the only rule here is: don't be boring!

The Barbour

If you haven't seen what is going on at Barbour, then now is the time to have a look. You may be surprised to find that they have restyled and updated their collection. New looks offer the classic design with modern a twist and some come in a range of fabulous colours.

See their Rainbow International Bright Brass range with shades from navy to fuchsia to yellow. It's not a cheap buy but you will be investing in a top quality British brand. Barbour's padded styles and wax fabric has certainly inspired many other brands to imitate them, so you will see plenty copycats for both spring and 2012 which may suit your budget better. It's worth investing in the look.

Style Tip: the Barbour generally comes with lots of pockets and detail so, be careful not to go too bulky if you are curvy, although you will find the lightweight fabrics easier to wear.

The Waterfall Knit

For those who prefer a more informal and comfortable look then a knit will probably suit you better. The waterfall knit is still popular this year so you can bring out your pieces from previous seasons, but you might want to invest in a new one in a great colour.

Style Tip: check the scale and length of the garment to ensure that it doesn't overwhelm you.

We all reinvent ourselves in various ways throughout life and a new year inspires us to start afresh, make some changes or try something new.

One of the easiest new year pick-me-ups is a little style revamp but where do you start? The best place to begin is your wardrobe, so make sure you assess the old before you start buying the new.

The Wardrobe Assessment

When assessing your wardrobe don't just flick through the hangers, take everything out and display it around the room, lay it out on the bed and swap things about. Sometimes it takes seeing garments in a different light, literally, to see how you can give them an update. Whilst it is wise to keep hold of some really good pieces, don't keep things just because they are good if they don't suit you. Someone else will make better use of them.

Keepers for 2012

Shapes and Styles

Midi and maxi skirt lengths are sticking around as are feminine fabrics such as chiffon and silk. There is still a vintage forites and fifties influence with looks that flatter the female shape such as full skirts, cinched waists and curve-flattering shift dresses. The dress is still popular, probably because it can be so easy and versatile to wear, so pull out your dresses and work them with different separates, colours and accessories to make them feel renewed.

Patterns

Unusual graphics, banding and bold floral patterns appear with a new twist. Mix up your patterns for a more current look. Unless you are very creative or fashion-forward, go with as much as you feel comfortable with; it should suit your personality and your overall look. Texture is as almost as popular as pattern including embellishments and overlays such as lace, devore, metals and sequins. If you don't own any, you might want to make that a new little purchase.

Colours

If you do one thing with your wardrobe in 2012, make sure you invest in your best red shades, it's the colour of the year. With colour still being a big story you can keep all the good colours you already have and, if necessary, tweak them for a more current look. Key shades for next season (apart from red) are pink, green, blue and orange, so hold on to these. Wear an entire block of colour or mix two strong colours if you can carry it off. Alternatively, mix a colour with a neutral such as cream, grey or camel.

Accessories - the easiest way to update

Accessories need an update too and they are a great way to revamp your look with little outlay. You've seen the articles about one dress with several different looks; it's all in the accessories.

The neck has become the focus for accessories with the scarf being a must-have in recent seasons. The most current neck detail is the collar. You can buy a top with a pretty collar or find a collar accessory to give your neat jerseys or cardigans a new look. If you're crafty and creative you can design your own.

Not everyone suits detail around the neck or décolletage so if this look isn't for you then make your new accessory a handbag. Find a great new shape or colour that works for your style. You won't go wrong with a day clutch bag to look utterly on-trend!

September is the month to...

September is a month to make the most of!

You've either had your holiday and the children are back at school so it's full steam ahead on preparing your wardrobe for the new season, or, if you've had a busy summer you might still be looking forward to a break in the sun.

So, here is your check list to get the most out of September, whether it's clinging to late summer or preparing for the new season...

September Holiday Last Minute Prep!

You're having a long awaited holiday in the sun and need a couple of last minute items but the high street is already in Autumn mode.

If you're still looking for that perfect bikini, you will find the larger stores always have beachwear in stock. You can still find a few sales around, particularly online, offering summer pieces. And don't forget, there is always the airport and shopping locally at your destination - which can be fun!

Late Summer Cover-up

It's that annoying ‘in-between seasons' and you don't know what to wear, so go for layers.

Knitwear is the easiest layering option as it is easy to fold up and put in a bag. Start sorting through your warmer knits to keep off the late summer chills. You will be glad to hear that styles from previous seasons such as chunky knits, the waterfall and the neat 50's style cardigans are on trend now and through Autumn and Winter, so you will still look current! But more about the new season's collections in my forthcoming newsletters...

Re-organise your Wardrobe

Even if you are going on a sunshine break, once you have sorted your holiday wardrobe, pack all your summer pieces away to make room for your warmer clothing.

It is worth investing in vacuum pack bags, they save on space and keep moths out!

Research your Autumn Outfits

It's a good time start thinking about looks for Autumn, what you like and what you have in your wardrobe already.

As with knitwear, there are plenty themes in the new season that you will recognise from last year so before you buy, look at what you have and consider how you can rework it, then decide what pieces you might want to add. I will be looking more closely at Autumn trends in the next few weeks .

Change over your Make-up

Start thinking about adapting your foundation and changing your make-up colour combinations for the new season.

How To Shop Smart

Today's consumers are becoming savvy fashion shoppers. We all love buying new clothes but these days, we tend to think more carefully about what we spend our hard-earned cash on.

With high street sales struggling, one thing you can guarantee is that we are in for some bumper spring/summer sales! So, if you need a bit of a steer on shopping wisely then consider the following: research what you need, what suits you and what is going to last.

Print and Colour

You will find plenty of colour in the forthcoming sales. Make sure you buy wisely by choosing your best colours and simple styles that suit you and your purchases will last you well in to the next few seasons.

Take care with prints, it's easier to dress a plain garment up or down. Note that there were very few prints at the wedding of the century only a few weeks ago! If you find something in neutral shades (black, grey, brown, white) it will be more versatile and have more longevity.

A Good Jacket

Choose a jacket that you can wear both over a dress or with jeans. Go for a mid-weight fabric as this will be perfect for those 'not quite coat' days. You can layer it with a scarf or knitwear in cooler weather. Ideally, you want it in one of your best neutral colours so you can wear it with the other colours in your palette.

A Dress

The dress has made a huge comeback in recent years and although fashion designers tell us it's not currently as popular, they are still in abundance on the high street because women find them so versatile. You can glam it up or play it down and if you get the right colour, shape, cut and fabric for you, you're onto a winner!

A Handbag

The best handbag to invest in is one that you can use everyday. It doesn't have to be in black or brown, a colour from your palette will inject some fun into your look. Or, a good alternative would be a smaller handbag for your essentials and a soft fabric bag for all the other gear we end up carrying around! Take care with oversized bags as they can be bad for your posture.

So, before you hit the shops, make sure you have done your research: know the colours, shapes and cuts you need for the key pieces that will make your wardrobe work for you in the months to come.

Make-up Spring Clean

Your make-up bag needs a refresh just like your wardrobe and Spring is the perfect time for a cosmetics overhaul.

* Old cosmetics can retain bacteria so you need to replace them accordingly. Replace mascara every 3 months and eyeliner, eye shadow, blusher and lipstick about every 18 months. If your make-up gets gooey, dried out or starts to smell unpleasant then throw it away.

* If some items in your make-up bag are redundant it is probably because you wear the same thing every day for ease or you've bought some shades that don't really suit you. Just like clothes, make-up should enhance your look so think carefully when you buy.

* It's easy to stick to what you know but don't get in a make-up rut! Try a new colour from time to time, just be sure that it is in a shade that compliments your colouring.

Find Your Perfect Prints

Pattern is worth investing in if you like it, but (and it's a big but), you need to choose designs that suit you.

Pattern can add sartorial punch to your wardrobe without having to go overboard and it's a great way to update your look. So, whether it's bringing in separates and accessories or choosing one statement piece, don't be afraid to invest in pattern but do make sure you find the right prints for you.

Choosing prints

The patterns you choose will depend largely on your personal taste. However, picking something simply because you like it doesn't mean it's going to suit you. So, here are my top tips to consider when choosing pattern:

A simple approach to working out what is best for you is to consider whether you have more straight lines or more curves in your figure. As a general guideline, prints with straight lines such as stripes or graphics work best on straighter bodies whilst rounder, softer shapes work best on curvier bodies.

Your scale
Ideally, you want the size of the pattern to match your build. If you are petite then a large print, like huge flowers for example, will swamp you; stick to small and medium patterns. Larger builds should wear larger patterns. Small prints won't balance with your build and can make you look larger.

Wearability
Pattern can detract or draw attention, depending on what part of the body you are wearing it. You need to wear pattern in a way that flatters your shape. If you are a 'triangle' shape, for example, you will not want to accentuate your wider hips so pattern on the bottom half is a no-no. You should wear print on your top half, however, as it will draw the eye to your upper body and away from the hips giving the illusion of a balanced shape.

Prints of the season

Key look 1: Stripes
*Small and large stripes together, diagonal stripes, stripes in a range of colours on one garment.
*Ideal for straighter bodies; wear finer stripes in the same colour but different tones if you are more curvy. Avoid stripes across fuller parts of the body. A rounded tummy will 'disappear' under a print.
*Find it in dresses, skirts, tops and handbags.

Key Look 2: Oriental Florals
*Softer and fewer flowers; some pieces have a print in one area rather than all over so it's easier to pull off (but think about where the print sits on your body). This style lends itself to more fluid fabric so looks ultra-feminine.
*Can be a good 'minimal' floral option for fuller figures.
*Find it in silky jackets, dresses and tops.

Key Look 3: Polka Dot
*Both large and small spots on everything and in all colours. The season's look is modern 40's and 50's vintage.
*Get the right size of spot and a good colour combination for you. Black, navy, brown or dark beige and white combinations are the classic options.
*Find it in full skirts, fitted jackets, feminine blouses.

Top Print Tips

*If you just want to dip your toe in pattern then wear the season's top accessory: the silk print scarf. If you're not a scarf type of woman then try an animal print bag in a summer colour.

*To keep it understated wear pattern with a very simple top and wear minimal accessories.

Make Colour Blocking Work For You

If the latest colour blocking trend makes you feel like running a mile, stop right there!! I have the easy, non-terrifying guide on how to do colour blocking in a way that shows you understand what it's all about without falling into the pitfalls of high fashion.

Think Style As Well As Colour

The first key element of colour blocking has nothing to do with colour but looks at styles and shapes.

Each garment, whether top, jacket, skirt or trousers, should be plain with no embellishment whatsoever. You are most likely to have some simple pieces like this already in your wardrobe: a red top, a navy blazer or even a pair of colourful shoes. Then you need to decide whether the garment in the colour you like suits you; can you carry off a floor length dress? Do pleats work on you? And so on...

Choosing The Right Colours For You

Here is a simple guide to who can wear what from subtler combinations to seriously bold blocking.

As long as you stick to colours within your palette you can play with opposites (say, red and blue) or make it more subtle by wearing one of your neutral colours (say stone, chocolate or charcoal) with another brighter colour from your palette. The ultimate colour blocking is of course white (your best white of course, say for a shirt) and black (say for the trousers/skirts), together with some bold coloured shoes and handbag this is an easy combination to put together. See below for ideas within your colour palette. (If you don't know which palette is best for you, now is the time to have that Colour Consultation you have promised yourself).

LIGHT colouring
Sensible colour blocking: light aqua with stone
Bold colour blocking: dusty rose with light periwinkle
Bolder colour blocking: violet with geranium

DEEP colouring
Sensible colour blocking: emerald green / dark navy
Bold colour blocking: scarlet / purple
Bolder colour blocking: lime / bittersweet

WARM colouring
Sensible colour blocking: lime / camel
Bold colour blocking: purple / bittersweet
Bolder colour blocking: amber / teal

COOL colouring
Sensible colour blocking: light periwinkle / purple
Bold colour blocking: hot pink / royal blue
Bolder colour blocking: duckegg / blue red

CLEAR colouring
Sensible colour blocking: true red / charcoal
Bold colour blocking: bright periwinkle / blush pink
Bolder colour blocking: apple green / true blue

SOFT colouring
Sensible colour blocking: verbena / cocoa
Bold colour blocking: claret / soft violet
Bolder colour blocking: sky blue / emerald turquoise

Bring colour into your look, not only with clothes but with shoes, handbags, nail colour (go for bright reds (within your palette, of course) or if you dare, go for the bright blues, greens and purples too).

A shirt dress becomes part of your colour blocking wardrobe when cinched with a contrasting belt and teamed with a brightly coloured handbag to finish off your look.

Make-up Finishes Your Colourful Look

If you are going for colour blocking with gusto, make sure your make-up stands up too. Your lips in particular should receive special attention. You should opt for the stronger shades in your palette to balance the look.

HOW TO DO OCCASION WEAR THIS SEASON

Where to start?

We will assume that the event is formal and as luck would have it, 'long' is in this season. So if in doubt you may want to opt for a longer length (just make sure the hem stops at the narrower bit of your leg - often just above the ankle).

No doubt many of you will have experienced shopping for a special outfit to find that the colour and/or size is sold out. The advice here is to go shopping as early on in the season as you can. By May, the best pieces will have gone and by June you start getting into the sales - there is nothing wrong with the sales, we love them - but unless you have done your research early on and know what is available and where to find it, you could quickly find yourself disenchanted with the whole process.

Special events also mean that there will be lots of photographs and you want these to show you at your best by the time they make the family album. Make sure that you stand out for all the right reasons and not because your outfit is out of place or just doesn't do you any justice.

Styles to choose this season

You can never go wrong with what we are calling 'chic sophistication', which translates into simple shapes and neutral colours. You can either dress these up (i.e. fabulous killer heels, jewels, the lot) or down (a waterfall cardigan might do the trick and some more comfortable wedge sandals). Though simplicity is what you are opting for, make sure that the fabric makes it special. Think of silk and taffetas for example.

Those of you who have already been to a style consultation will know the emphasis we put on the weight and structure of the fabric and how the curvier you are the more fluid the fabric should be; whilst if your body lines are straighter you can make those heavier stiffer fabrics your best friends.

Lace will come in many shades this season. The beauty of lace is that it allows you to show some skin without being too obvious! You will find lace that suits both an elegant occasion and lace for more casual occasions too.

Hats or fascinators? Fascinators are often easier and cheaper to manage - and no need to take them off when you hit the dance floor! As for hats, there are all sorts of rules to wearing them: black rims can throw a black shadow on your face so think about it; don't choose a hat with a rim that extends wider than your shoulders either, it will look too big.

Colours from this season

I have talked about neutral shades, but if it is colour you are after, there are plenty around. To help you in the right direction this season here are some tips: there is an abundance of red (a bit too much if you are the mother of the bride or groom maybe); there is every single blue you can dream but the colour which is stealing the show is green, particularly a leafy green.

You could mix your blues and your greens in lovely fluid chiffons, a fabric trend this season.

You will have seen/heard that colour blocking is the thing, and this is perfect for the Dramatics who like to make an entrance or the Clears who need to wear colours in a contrasting way. Other style personalities and colourings will choose colours from their palette for best effect.
